So I spent the day yesterday helping my son Isaiah move the last of his belongings from Duluth to my home temporarily as he looks for a place to live in the area. So today is my Monday, and unlike so many people I know, I love Mondays! I have a fresh week in front of me and a great Sunday of Worship behind me – What is not to love!
My morning was spent in the office catching up on a few things, planning worship for Wednesday and some sermon writing. Now it was time to grab a Salad and hang out at my new favorite Coffee Shop Monkabeans. As I try to find a place to sit I observe two ladies sitting at a table discussing the Bible. I placed my order and sat down by the window. Behind me, a local Pastor sits with someone and has a conversation about doing ministry together.
It just seems like I can not get away from Christians! They seem to be everywhere, what a blessing. As I reflect on my week, the days that lie ahead and am drawn back to Sunday’s message. “Jesus Said It, I Believe it – ‘nuf said!” The text for the message was Luke 9 as Jesus heals a man born blind.
As I studied the text this weekend, I was struck by the simplicity of this miracle.
Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eye. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam“. So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. John 9:6-8
Go and wash – He washed and could see. That’s it, simply put. What if it was just that simple. What if all it took to see the work of God in my life was simply listening to Jesus. How great would that be – how much would that take the pressure off my trying to figure out what God want of me.
The truth is I continue to come back to the truth that it really is that simple, Jesus really does tell me exactly what he desires of me.
I have found the same things as I began the move back to the Seminary as a student, after more than 30 years away from college. But it has come down to simply reading the requirements of the class, and doing it. While it takes plenty of time, I don’t worry from week to week about what I should be doing for class.
So my greatest ponder for today is “What is Scripture saying to me today that I need hearing and doing?”
For me, the words are simple and direct “Remain in me, and I will remain in you…apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:4a,5b
Amidst all the other stuff of my day, I MUST spend the time to remain in Christ, and recognize just how much I need Him. Which makes me smile all the more as I hear all of the conversation going on all around me in the coffee Shop. I would love to write more, but I need to get back to The Word…remaining in Christ!
Something to Ponder: How about you? What simple truth are you being called to today?
